How to benefit from training: "Why Train Them If They'll Just Leave?"

I always hear this sentiment from business owners, especially in small markets like Brunei.

A classroom training in session with the trainer referring to the display on the screen.

Many companies don't prioritise staff development, especially at the junior level. And I get it. When the budget is tight and turnover is high, training feels like a luxury.

But here's what I've quietly observed over the years...

Yes, staff may leave.

Yes, some may not even change after training.

Yes, training alone won't fix every issue.

But when done with intention, training can spark a shift - not just in skills, but in attitude, motivation and morale.

The challenge isn't just about whether to train. It's also about who to train, what support they get after the training and how the leadership shows up in the process.

A one-off workshop with no follow-through won't transform teams. But when training is part of a bigger picture - where expectations are clear, feedback is welcomed and change is supported, that's when the magic happens!

Here's how to reap benefits from soft skills training...

Tips for the business owners / leadership team:

  • Select staff who show curiosity and initiative.

  • Follow up with conversations, even simple ones like "What did you learn?" or "What would you like to try now?".

  • Recognise that your behaviour sets the tone. If you're not open to change, why should you team be?

Tips for the staff:

  • If your company invests in your development, take it seriously.

  • Apply what you've learned. Share it. Build on it.

  • Your growth is your responsibility too, not just your employer's.

Who benefits from soft skills training?

We can all play a role in raising the standards of our workforce. If every business trains well, at all levels, our workforce evolves. Over time, every new recruit's calibre will be better than mediocre, giving us better quality candidates to choose from. Everyone wins!
