About Doris Suresh
Corporate Trainer & Soft Skills Specialist in Brunei

I'm a professional corporate trainer based in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei, and I've spent the better part of 25 years working in real business environments across Asia Pacific - in sales, marketing, operations and training.

I run Doris Suresh Consulting, a boutique training company that specialises in power skills, usually known as soft skills, and professional development programs. I work with organisations that want their people to communicate better, carry themselves more professionally and work together more effectively.

My programs are delivered in person, at venues of your choosing - in Brunei or anywhere across Southeast Asia. And they're always built around your team's actual challenges, not a generic slide deck I've used a hundred times before.

I believe training should leave a mark. Not just tick a box.

My Background

My career started at the Sheraton Utama Hotel, Brunei. From there it grew into regional roles with Starwood Hotels & Resorts, Marriott and Shangri-La, based in Singapore.

Over more than two decades, I worked across frontline operations, sales, marketing, data analytics and regional training - in fast-paced, high-pressure environments where results were expected and excuses weren't particularly welcome. That experience is still the backbone of how I train today.

I also served as General Manager of an eco-resort in Brunei, which gave me a different kind of insight entirely. Running an operation - managing people, handling performance gaps, making decisions with limited resources - taught me things about leadership and workplace dynamics that no training course ever could. When I work with managers and business owners today, I understand their world because I've lived in it.

I'm not a trainer who came from academia. I came from the workplace. And I think that makes a real difference in how I connect with the people I train.

Training Experience

Training has been at the core of my work for over two decades.

I spent 12 years delivering training programs across Asia Pacific with Starwood Hotels & Resorts, followed by two years with a leading telecommunications company in Brunei before establishing my own independent training practice.

Today, Doris Suresh Consulting serves organisations from large corporates and government-linked companies to small and medium-sized businesses that want a reliable, experienced training partner without the overhead of a large training firm.

I also work with a growing number of graduates and young professionals who are transitioning from school into the workforce. This is an area I'm genuinely passionate about - because the gap between what school teaches and what workplaces expect is wider than most people realise.

China

Beijing, China - a quick visit to Tiananmen Square before the start of my training class. One of 36 cities I've trained in across Asia Pacific.

India

Agra, India - a four-hour drive from Delhi to visit the Taj Mahal before my training class began. Worth every minute.

Regional & Cross-Cultural Exposure

My training work has taken me to 36 cities across the Asia Pacific region, including cities across Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, China, Japan and India.

Training across that many cultures taught me something that I now consider fundamental to how I work: people learn best when they feel understood and respected. That sounds simple, but it changes everything about how you design and deliver a session.

Every program I run is customised to the organisation, the participants and the context. I don't believe in generic training and I've never delivered the same session twice in exactly the same way.

Culture and Language

I come from mixed Chinese and Indian heritage, and I grew up in an environment where different languages, customs and ways of seeing the world were part of everyday life. That upbringing shaped how naturally I work across cultures.

I'm fluent in English and Malay, and conversant in Hakka, Mandarin, Cantonese and Hokkien. In practice, this means I can connect with participants in a way that feels comfortable and familiar to them - which matters more than most people give it credit for when it comes to how much someone is willing to learn in a room.

Why Work with Me

There are a lot of trainers out there. Here's what I can honestly say about working with me.

I bring real business experience into every session - not just training theory. I've worked in the industries my clients come from. I've managed teams, handled difficult people, navigated office politics and sat in the same meetings that frustrate the people I now train. That shared reality is what makes the conversations in my workshops feel genuine rather than scripted.

I also customise everything. I won't show up with a standard program and call it tailored because I changed the company name on the cover slide. Proper customisation means understanding your organisation, your people and what you're actually trying to fix - before a single session begins.

Every program I deliver is:

  • Conducted in person, at your chosen venue

  • Practical, workplace-focused and immediately applicable

  • Customised to your organisation, your industry and your participants

  • Designed to create real behavioural change - not just a good day out of the office
